Drive-through Neon Museum

February 8, 2007

News on the El Vado Motel from Preservation Online:

Chavez says city officials have been brainstorming about a new use for the Pueblo-style motel. “One of the ideas we’re throwing around is a neon museum,” he says. The museum could display some of Route 66’s salvaged neon signs, Chavez says. “It would be almost like a drive-through museum.”

Our city’s landmarks urban conservation commission voted 4-2 against demolishing the historic motel. This means owner, Richard Gonzales, will have to wait at least one year before he can knock the old motel down and make room for condos.

There are certainly a number of motels along Central Ave./Historic Route 66 that are in dire need of a wrecking ball, but the El Vado has character–some alluring mix of whitewash, grit, and neon. I’m not sure about a ‘neon museum’, but a Rt. 66 museum sounds great.
