The Shins under Down Under

February 17, 2007

Albuquerque’s most notorious music export, The Shins, recently released their third album Wincing the Night Away on Seattle based Sup Pop Records. I like it, but you don’t have to take my word for it.. (Hat tip, Reading Rainbow.)

Today The Shins call Portland, Ore. home (among others), but they always remind masses they’re from Albuquerque. So we’ve got that going for us.

Anyway, bands of The Shins’ stature are expected to make rounds with the press when they release a new record. Poking around the internet I stumbled upon an interview the New Zealand Harold did with lead vocalist, James Mercer. Great interview. High points: Mercer’s candid and level-headed remarks on success, the story behind “New Slang’s” cameo in Garden State, and the Flake Music name drop. Low point: the reporter’s incessant comparisons to Morrissey–mention the connection once, buddy.

Check out the article. Pick up the new album (and the other two, too!). Go support some local (enough) music tonight.
