Begay gets his ‘Big Ben’ on

April 11, 2007

Local professional golfer Notah Begay III is making a move to London. The first American Indian to win on the PGA Tour, Begay lost his tour card after a series of health problems. Recently, the Navajo golfer has worked with Albuquerque doctors and trainers to mend his back and regain confidence in his game. Healthy for the first time in five years, last November, Begay earned a spot on the European Tour after placing 6th in that tour’s Qualifying School.

With his tour card in hand, Cybergolf reports Begay has crossed the pond and is competing on this year’s European PGA Tour. This season, Begay has made cuts in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the Dubai Desert Classic. His next event is the Open de España in Madrid, Spain, April 26 to 29.

Begay’s comeback on the professional golf scene adds just a little more shine to his legacy. A three sport athlete at the Albuquerque Academy and a teammate (and I believe roommate) of Tiger Woods at Stanford, his career, philanthropy and life story are remarkable on so many levels. I’m not sure a local athlete has given more to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and American Indian communities. This isn’t to say he isn’t without his flaws (seven day stint in jail in 2000 for a DWI violation), but his ability to persevere through the difficult times speaks volumes about his character.

Cheers, Notah! Good luck, and remember to ‘Look Right.’

Notah and Tiger didn’t overlap at Stanford…Notah graduated a few years before Tiger got there.

Fair enough. I guess I stand corrected — although, the two are very good friends.
