Graduated college, now what? City Council

May 1, 2007

While folks are trying to figure out which the Democrat will challenge Rep. Heather Wilson in the next U.S. House raceCity Councilor Martin Heinrich or Mayor Marty Chavez (don’t even think about tossing Patsy Madrid’s name into the race) — the Daily Lobo is trying to figure out who will fill Heinrich’s seat should he find a spot on The Hill.

One possible contender, Joseph Garcia.

Joseph Garcia, President of UNM’s Graduate and Professional Student Association. Garcia has not said if he intends to run for city council, but the idea does intrigue him — heck, it intrigues me.

UNM is one of Albuquerque’s most vital resource in terms of intellectual capital and economic growth; you’d be kidding yourself to think the graduate programs (and in fact, all programs at all levels at the university) don’t play a significant role in the city’s success. Garcia’s peers are tomorrows leaders. The relationships he has built at UNM are potentially priceless resources if he were elected to public office. Given his experience working with the university, one would assume there is no better person to bridge the relationship gaps that currently exist between the city and the university.

Fresh, starry-eyed blood. Gumption and ambition. The city council could use some of that. Maybe Joseph Garcia can deliver?

Thank you for your kind words. You have it correct. There is certainly a need to connect UNM with the Albuquerque community.

Improving the Albuquerque/UNM connection will benefit both institutions and the members of both communities. UNM students can research issues for the city and the state so decision makers can develop better solutions for problems. The experience gained by students will build resumes and improve job perspectives upon graduation.

Joseph understands the potential for all parties if this can be achieved and he has been working to make this a reality. He will be a fresh face with innovative ideas to improve the city when he is on the city council. We need new blood at the national level, at the state level, and at the local level of government and Joseph Garcia is the best person for the job.
