Invisible series of tubes coming to Los Ranchos

May 12, 2007

Look out guys, the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque is gettin’ all 21st century on us! RedOrbit reports Los Ranchos is teaming up with Roadrunner Communications to offer residents village-wide Wi-Fi for $50 a month:

Wi-Fi should be available soon within a mile of Village Hall first, then it will move out from there, [Mayor Larry] Abraham told village trustees Wednesday night.

. . . .

Abraham said the service can be used to provide security cameras for village locations or for individual residents. The cameras would beam images using Wi-Fi technology to a Web site where the cameras can be monitored by residents.

Fancy. It’d be great if it was free, but you can’t always have your cake and eat it, too — I guess. It’ll be interesting to see how many residents opt for the village’s Wi-Fi. Although Los Ranchos is its own municipality, it’s probably just about the perfect size test this sort of thing out for the greater metro area. Well, if I ignore what’s going on up on that mesa.
