Map making — alive and well
Local blogger sooshie has slapped together a sweet little map of Albuquerque area ‘trail riding.’
I’ve been out here for almost 3 years now, and have spent the last 2 summers really getting into mountain biking. It only makes sense since I have a mountain in my back yard. As some kind of proof to my dedication to the cause I have made a Google Map of the different Albuquerque trailheads. This includes the ski area, foothills as well as some of the other places around the city.
Really cool. As I think I’ve pointed out before, sooshie isn’t the first local to tailor Albuquerque maps for a specific niche. It’d be great if, you know, the city would start putting interactive maps up online. Slap a few maps with some pictures on the ‘Day Trips & Walking Tours’ page — invaluable, I’d think.
UPDATE: The city does offer at least one niche specific map — Dog Parks! I’ve looked for others, but this is the only one I’ve found.
Thanks for linking to our Dog Parks map!
Since you mention it, I might as well share exciting map-making scoop about upcoming Google maps on CABQ.gov.
Just this week, in fact, we built prototypes of the following mashups:
* City Attractions
* Bike Trails (Entrance points for Paseo del Bosque Trail)
* Open Space
* Recycling drop-off locations
* Dump drop-off locations
* Animal Control locations (pounds) & Animal Adoption
* Libraries
* Community Centers
* Senior Centers
* Pools
We’ll be launching them in the next couple of weeks.
Until then, perhaps you might enjoy a new Google map we created earlier this week?

This news is really cool. The city’s website is on a fantastic trajectory.
A city’s website should be viewed like a public utility, and like a public utility a city should sink some money into it. I think ABQ’s current leadership is leading the way with this vision.
Some people think that they are way too smart. They think their comments are wonders of the world! Dudes don’t be so self-confident.
